Why First Coast Running Medicine

One-on-One Care That Actually Fits Your Life

Most PT experiences feel like a revolving door, a different face every visit, generic exercises, and appointments that end before you feel heard. First Coast Running Medicine is built differently. Dr. Brooke Shivers sees every patient herself, every single session. No aides. No assistants. No protocols handed off to a tech. She takes the time to find the root cause of your problem and build a plan that works with your training schedule, not against it.

every session with a doctor of physical therapy

Every evaluation, every session, every follow-up is led by Dr. Brooke, a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist with post-doctoral residency training. Nothing gets lost in translation, and your care stays consistent from day one.

Rooted in Running Science

Dr. Brooke's graduate research focused on running gait mechanics, and her doctoral capstone centered on step-rate manipulation in return-to-run rehabilitation. When she assesses how you move, it's not guesswork, it's grounded in years of specialized study and clinical training.

Built for People Who Refuse to Sit Still

First Coast Running Medicine treats runners, active adults, and field and court athletes of all kinds. If you move and you want a provider who understands athletic performance, not just pain management, you're in the right place.

A Plan That Keeps You Active

The goal is never to tell you to stop. From your first visit, Dr. Brooke builds a program that works around your training modifying where needed, progressing as you heal, and keeping you as close to full activity as possible the whole way through.

How It Works

Analyze

Every plan starts with a full movement assessment. Dr. Brooke digs into your history, how you move, and what's actually driving the problem, not just where it hurts. You leave the first visit with a clear picture of the root cause and a plan built around your goals.

adapt

Once the root cause is identified, the work begins. Dr. Brooke introduces progressive strength training designed to promote tissue adaptation, building the capacity your body needs to handle the demands of running, training, and competition without breaking down.

FAQs

Have questions about how we work or what to expect? Here are the ones we hear most often.

I'm not a runner, is First Coast Running Medicine right for me?

Absolutely. The name reflects our deep specialization in running mechanics and running-related injuries, but we treat all active adults and athletes. Whether you lift, play recreational sports, or just want to stay active without pain, if you move and something is slowing you down, we can help. First Coast Running Medicine serves runners, field and court athletes, and active adults of all kinds.

Do I have to stop working out while I'm in PT?

Our goal is to keep you moving not put you on the bench. Dr. Brooke will work with you to modify your activity where clinically needed while the injury heals, so you can stay as close to your training routine as safely possible throughout the process. Stopping entirely is rarely the answer.

Why is this a cash-based practice?

Cash-based care means every session is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, not a 15-minute insurance appointment split across three patients with an aide doing most of the work. You get Dr. Brooke's full, undivided attention every visit, every time. We provide superbills upon request for potential out-of-network reimbursement, and we accept HSA/FSA.

What does a running gait analysis actually involve?

It's a detailed video and biomechanics review of how you run not just a quick visual scan from the sidelines. Dr. Brooke analyzes your mechanics frame by frame, identifies the movement patterns that may be contributing to your injury or limiting your performance, and provides specific, actionable changes that become part of your care plan.

How do I get started?

We're happy to talk it through, no commitment required.
